The First Witch of Boston

Based on true firsthand accounts, John Winthrop’s own diary, and historical Massachusetts Bay Court records, The First Witch of Boston is the story of Thomas Jones and Margaret Jones, the first woman to be tried and executed for witchcraft in Boston in June of 1648. The First Witch of Boston allows us to peer inside the very intimate world of a couple who, despite differing temperaments, are bound by a love that has lasted almost twenty years.

Thomas discovers Margaret’s journals, which she kept from the time she met Thomas until her tragic end.  Through her brief entries and Thomas’ third person POV memories, the novel tells the story of their tumultuous life together, from rural Berkshire, England, to bustling London, to the young port town of Charlestown, Massachusetts. Despite triumphs and misfortunes, desires and tragedy, and moments of inexplicable and other-worldly magic, their marriage is a tale of undying love and passion amid the political and religious turmoil of both Old and New England. When the fear and hysteria of the outside Puritan world threaten to break them apart, secrets come to light that could destroy their bond from within. In the face of a possible death sentence, in one of the darkest hours of our collective history, can Thomas and Margaret’s love survive and overcome?
